Why You Need Personal Training

Categories: Personal Training

Think Personal Training is a Luxury? History says otherwise…

If you think back about 100 years ago, many of the most common components of modern health and wellness didn’t exist.

There was no need for “gym” as we know it.
Life was your gym.

Life was very strenuous…
There were no machines to do all the work…
No powerful hydraulics and technology to rely upon…

The concept of a building where you put special clothes on and intentionally lifted the same heavy things over and over or ran in place on a machine just so you could sweat was completely unheard of.

(It does sound a little weird when you think about it.)

If you described such a place to someone back then, they would have looked at you like you were insane.

Now fast-forward a century…

Almost overnight, we went from this vigorous lifestyle to one where we sit still in front of a screen for hours on end, and live a life so fast-paced we don’t have time to think about or attend to our health.

The result?

  • Weight gain…
  • High blood pressure…
  • Heart disease…
  • Diabetes…

The consequences of our modern lifestyle are impossible to ignore.

Another very powerful consideration is our lengthening lifespan.

Did you know the Center for Disease Control says that 100 years ago, the average life expectancy was 56 years!

Today women regularly reach age 80, and men can expect to see 75.

Today, if you passed away at 56 years of age, everyone would be saying, “Oh my gosh! What happened!”

Lets face it, father time comes at you fast. Age catches up to us and it can start to get difficult to keep your body in the shape you want it.

Once we turn 30, our bodies can no longer release the number of hormones, like testosterone, that help keep us strong and give us the energy to get to the gym. Weight loss after 30 (and especially 40 and 50) can at times seem impossible, whether its low energy levels stopping you or just the aches and pains that “come with age”.

It can feel like a hopeless journey…

But it doesn’t have to be!

We all want to feel comfortable in our own bodies. Aches and pains that make it hard to move around can have a direct effect on your confidence, and keep you from living life with the freedom you expect and deserve.

Once we start moving away from doing the things our bodies were SUPPOSED to do, we open the door for problems…

Before going any further, we need to make a major clarification…

Patients come into our clinic, and when asked if they exercise, they reply, “Well, I go for a walk every day.”. And they say so with a look of pride.

This is very good…certainly better than sitting on the couch.

But it’s simply not enough…

First, we have “Physical Activity” – the stuff we’re required to do as we tend to our daily tasks such as: walking, climbing stairs, carrying groceries, loading and unloading cars, and laundry.

This differs from “exercise”, which is a “planned, structured and repetitive body movement done to improve or maintain one or more components of physical fitness.”

See the difference?

Exercise is done to IMPROVE how we function.

This goes well beyond physical activity.

This brings us back to those stats above…

You can now expect to live a much longer life than just a few generations ago.

This means that the decisions you’re making today about your activity level, nutrition and even your mindset will directly impact your quality of life for decades to come.

Now we can see the pressing need to give our health the attention it requires in an era when we have drifted away from physical exertion.

And, we can see that our frenzied lifestyle forces us to put our health on the back burner while raising our stress levels at the same time.

The conclusion?

Exercise in our modern era is NOT a luxury. It’s absolutely essential!

But it MUST be designed and implemented correctly!

So where can you turn?

A common concern among those looking to take charge of their health is knowing exactly who to trust.

When you think of a cliche “personal trainer” it may conjure images of some juiced up guy in a headband yelling at you to complete another rep or limping out of the gym because whoever wrote your program treated you like you were in the NFL.
