Experiencing Pain in Your Tailbone But Don’t Know What to Do About It?

If you’ve ever sat down or bent over and felt shooting pain in your tailbone, you may have felt confused. It’s not every day that we feel discomfort in this area! Tailbone pain, also called coccydynia or coccygodynia, typically will disappear on its own within a few weeks or months, however, it does have the potential to become a chronic issue.

Thankfully, you don’t have to wait the pain out. Pelvic floor therapy can help relieve this kind of discomfort in adults and children through several techniques.

The Benefits of Seeing a Pelvic Floor Therapist:

Pelvic floor therapy is an advanced and innovative treatment approach designed to address pelvic floor and pelvic girdle issues. Through various techniques, this therapy enhances the strength, mobility, and overall functionality of the pelvic floor, hip, core, and reproductive systems. By targeting the root causes of these problems, pelvic floor therapy offers effective solutions and empowers individuals to overcome their pelvic health challenges.

What Causes Tailbone Pain:

  • Tailbone pain occurs in or around the bottom of the spine, or the coccyx. This specific type of pain can be caused by many factors, including trauma to the coccyx after a hard fall, sitting for too long on a hard surface (chairs, floors), joint changes due to age, or childbirth.
  • Pain in the tailbone is usually described as feeling dull or aching, but it can become unbearable sharp while sitting or getting up from a seating position to a standing one. It may also become difficult to go to the bathroom, and intercourse may be painful as well. Tailbone pain can cause complications with menstruation. Children may also have issues with bowel movements as a result of a coccyx injury.
  • If you’re unsure whether or not you’ve sustained an injury to your tailbone that is causing you pain, it’s a good idea to get checked out by a medical professional to determine what the issue might be!

How Can Pelvic Floor Therapy Help Treat Sacral & Coccyx Pain?

Pelvic floor physical therapy can benefit patients struggling with coccyx pain in many ways. Here at Back In Motion Physical Therapy & Performance in Fort MyersCape Coral physical therapy & Estero, FL, our skilled therapists can show you or your child how to do pelvic floor relaxation techniques. These may include methods such as deep breathing while completely relaxing your pelvic floor (as you would while going to the bathroom.)

A pelvic floor specialist can help determine what the underlying cause is contributing to your pain problem. They know how to properly assess sacrococcygeal joint movement to ensure that there are no abnormalities or complications.

Your pelvic floor therapist may recommend mobilization treatments for your tailbone, especially if you’ve suffered from a fall. They may also recommend ice and heat treatments, pelvic floor relaxation techniques, and yoga poses you can perform to relax your hip muscles.

If you or your child have coccyx pain, don’t wait until it becomes unbearable to seek help. The earlier you begin treatment at Back In Motion Physical Therapy & Performance, the better your overall outcome will be and the quicker you’ll be able to return to a comfortable life.

Dr Sharon was diligent in dealing with my back and neck issues. She increased my mobility tremendously and the home exercises she gave me did wonders for my golf game and general health. I want to continue a program to increase my mobility even more and enjoy the benefits of painless activities. Her program has done wonders

In September 2022 I had a complex shoulder surgery and began a regimen of physical therapy with Dr. Sharon Sims of Back in Motion here in Verandah. I can only say that today I’m in better physical shape then I’ve been in years. By following her treatment plan I’m able to play “pain free golf” a couple of time a week and participate in fitness activities -- pickleball is next on my list. It wasn’t easy, requiring a lot of work, but it paid off. Thanks Dr. Sharon.I have been seeing Dr. Sharon for a few weeks. After the 2nd visit the severe lower back pain was alleviated. So much so that I have been able to resume golf with much better swing ( although that's not saying much LoL).If you need physical therapy this is the place and she is the right doctor.Be prepared to work hard. If you follow directions you'll be satisfied.

Dr. Sharon is a miracle worker! I ended up with nerve damage after a partial knee replacement and was very slow to recover. Dr. Sharon kept me motivated even though I was not seeing immediate improvement. I kept at it and she has helped me build back my quad strength and range of motion. She noticed I also had some back issues and the orthopedic inserts she recommended for me are really alleviating my back pain and helping me with my gait. I also tried dry needling and that also helped relieve pain and helped with my range of motion. My surgeon said it could take up to a year for my nerves to regenerate and I plan on continuing to see Dr. Sharon until I reach my goal of walking without a limp and being able to resume an active lifestyle. Dr. Sharon was able to adapt exercises so that I could feel that I was improving and her vast experience in the field was obvious. I strongly recommend Dr. Sharon for both flexibility and pain treatment as well as post operative care. She is the best!

I attended an arthritis discovery seminar by Dr. Sharon Sims and found it very informative. I booked my first appointment for an evaluation and the office staff made the process extremely easy and more importantly, efficient! Dr. Sharon's diagnosis was thorough and a treatment plan immediately put into place and future appointments booked. I feel much better after just 4 appointments. Thank you, Dr. Sharon and Back in Motion! Highly recommend!

I suffered a stroke in early October 2021. The stroke mostly resulted in numbness and loss of sensory perception on my left side. However, Dr. Sharon pointed out that it also involved some loss of some motor skills along with a weakened sense of balance.Dr. Sharon has been working with me not only in strengthening my left side but also increasing my sense of balance which has definitely improved over the last several weeks. My golf game has also improved as a result of the therapy.Dr. Sharon’s diagnostic and evaluation skills are exceptional along with her ability to arrive at a treatment plan that has reduced some of the damage from my stroke. I highly recommend Dr. Sharon and am thankful for the physical therapy which she has provided. Thanks,Gary C. Reich D.D.S. ( retired)
