What is Urinary Incontinence & Why is it Never Normal?

We’ve heard this phrase more times than I can count. Unfortunately, too many men and women consider urinary incontinence a normal part of life. Let me be the first to tell you that no matter your age, urinary incontinence is NOT normal.

Urinary incontinence is a condition in which urine is involuntarily excreted due to a lack of control over the urinary sphincter (the two muscles that control the exit of urine).

Urinary Incontinence Signs & Symptoms:

  • Sudden urge to urinate that results in unintentional urination before reaching a restroom
  • Urine leakage when placing stress on the bladder such as when coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising
  • An inability to fully empty the bladder, which may result in constant dripping of urine
  • Sporadic leakages of large amounts of urine

What Causes Urinary Incontinence & the Different Kinds of Incontinence?

There are various reasons why individuals may experience urinary incontinence despite their efforts to control it. In some cases, short-term urinary incontinence may arise due to temporary conditions like urinary tract infections, vaginal infections, or constipation and may resolve independently. Certain medications can also cause temporary bladder control problems that typically improve after discontinuation. However, if urinary incontinence persists, it may indicate an underlying condition such as:

  • Weak bladder muscles
  • Overactive bladder muscles
  • Damaged bladder nerves resulting from diseases like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s
  • Enlarged prostate causing blockage
  • Difficulty reaching the bathroom on time due to conditions like arthritis
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Prostatitis
  • Benign prostate hyperplasia
  • Damaged pelvic floor nerves due to injury or surgery

The Different Types of Urinary Incontinence We Treat

Stress incontinence is caused when one experiences a urine leak due to pressure on the bladder. For example, stress incontinence can occur when exercising, lifting heavy objects, laughing, coughing, or sneezing. This is the most common type of bladder control problem in younger to middle-aged women, and it may occur around the time of menopause.

Urge incontinence is caused when there is a sudden and emergent need to urinate. Someone experiencing urge incontinence may not have enough time to make it to the toilet before leakage occurs. This type of bladder control problems is usually a result of diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or stroke.

Overflow incontinence is caused by a bladder that is always full, thus causing leakage to occur. For example, if a man has an enlarged prostate that is blocking his urethra, it can be difficult to empty the bladder. Other conditions, such as diabetes and spinal cord injuries, can also cause this type of bladder control problem.

Functional incontinence is caused when people have a condition that makes it hard to move to the bathroom quickly enough before leakage occurs. People with functional incontinence actually have normal bladder control; however, they have an alternative condition (such as arthritis) that makes it difficult to move and thus results in leakage if they cannot make it to the toilet in time.

Dr Sharon was diligent in dealing with my back and neck issues. She increased my mobility tremendously and the home exercises she gave me did wonders for my golf game and general health. I want to continue a program to increase my mobility even more and enjoy the benefits of painless activities. Her program has done wonders

In September 2022 I had a complex shoulder surgery and began a regimen of physical therapy with Dr. Sharon Sims of Back in Motion here in Verandah. I can only say that today I’m in better physical shape then I’ve been in years. By following her treatment plan I’m able to play “pain free golf” a couple of time a week and participate in fitness activities -- pickleball is next on my list. It wasn’t easy, requiring a lot of work, but it paid off. Thanks Dr. Sharon.I have been seeing Dr. Sharon for a few weeks. After the 2nd visit the severe lower back pain was alleviated. So much so that I have been able to resume golf with much better swing ( although that's not saying much LoL).If you need physical therapy this is the place and she is the right doctor.Be prepared to work hard. If you follow directions you'll be satisfied.

Dr. Sharon is a miracle worker! I ended up with nerve damage after a partial knee replacement and was very slow to recover. Dr. Sharon kept me motivated even though I was not seeing immediate improvement. I kept at it and she has helped me build back my quad strength and range of motion. She noticed I also had some back issues and the orthopedic inserts she recommended for me are really alleviating my back pain and helping me with my gait. I also tried dry needling and that also helped relieve pain and helped with my range of motion. My surgeon said it could take up to a year for my nerves to regenerate and I plan on continuing to see Dr. Sharon until I reach my goal of walking without a limp and being able to resume an active lifestyle. Dr. Sharon was able to adapt exercises so that I could feel that I was improving and her vast experience in the field was obvious. I strongly recommend Dr. Sharon for both flexibility and pain treatment as well as post operative care. She is the best!

I attended an arthritis discovery seminar by Dr. Sharon Sims and found it very informative. I booked my first appointment for an evaluation and the office staff made the process extremely easy and more importantly, efficient! Dr. Sharon's diagnosis was thorough and a treatment plan immediately put into place and future appointments booked. I feel much better after just 4 appointments. Thank you, Dr. Sharon and Back in Motion! Highly recommend!

I suffered a stroke in early October 2021. The stroke mostly resulted in numbness and loss of sensory perception on my left side. However, Dr. Sharon pointed out that it also involved some loss of some motor skills along with a weakened sense of balance.Dr. Sharon has been working with me not only in strengthening my left side but also increasing my sense of balance which has definitely improved over the last several weeks. My golf game has also improved as a result of the therapy.Dr. Sharon’s diagnostic and evaluation skills are exceptional along with her ability to arrive at a treatment plan that has reduced some of the damage from my stroke. I highly recommend Dr. Sharon and am thankful for the physical therapy which she has provided. Thanks,Gary C. Reich D.D.S. ( retired)
