If Your Athletic Injury is Untreated or Misdiagnosed Things Will Likely Only Get Worse…

Sports injuries are an all-too-common challenge faced by athletes of all levels, and if left unaddressed, they can become chronic and hinder your performance. But fear not, our goal is not to discourage you but to educate and empower you because sports injuries don’t have to hold you back indefinitely.

Over the years, we’ve heard numerous stories of athletes choosing the “rest and wait” approach when dealing with sports injuries. While it may offer temporary relief, it often leads to frustration when the pain and limitations return.

Another common scenario is athletes being advised to take painkillers and rest to see if the injury improves. Unfortunately, this approach rarely provides long-term solutions, and after weeks of rest, the pain persists, leading athletes back to square one. This cycle can sometimes result in stronger medications, more rest, or unnecessary medical procedures.

If this sounds familiar to you and your sports injury, know that you are not alone. There can be various reasons why sports injuries linger longer than they should, and it can be confusing to receive different explanations from various sources. While many people offer advice, not all of it is reliable or credible.

Running injuries can stem from not having enough hip mobility.

How We Treat Sports Injuries

Watch this quick video and learn why most sports injuries occurs and how we treat it at Back in Motion Physical Therapy & Performance.

The Athletic & Sport Injury Conditions We Treat

Shinbone tension can cause shin splints. Shin splints can be excruciatingly painful and prevent you from completing your daily routine. However, they can be avoided by wearing appropriate footwear, stretching, and warming up before exercise. Typically, most shin splints occur from a biomechanical problem related to the ankle joint where the ankle doesn’t “dorsiflex” adequately. This causes abnormal motion of the foot and shin.

A sprain happens when a ligament that connects one bone to another becomes overstretched. This could be an ongoing issue if not addressed properly. Usually, most athletic injuries are inversion ankle sprains where the ligaments on the outside of the ankle are injured. This commonly occurs due to the lack of ankle flexibility, having a “high arch,” or lack of peroneal muscle strength and neuromuscular control. Regardless of the reason, these can be treated.

Plantar fasciitis is the number one sports injury we treat at our clinic. The plantar fascia is a facial band that connects the heel to the forefoot. This tissue can become irritated from an array of issues, from lack of foot stability, improper training, or lack of ankle dorsiflexion. Patients suffering from plantar fasciitis can make a pretty quick turnaround if the underlying issue is addressed.

A strained muscle is a small tearing of the muscle fibers. Depending on the severity of the issue, these usually make a quick recovery. The most common muscle strains we see are the lower back, hamstring, the groin. and hip flexors.

Tendonitis or tendon pathology are some of the most common sports injuries. Usually, patients will have issues with their achilles, hamstring, patellar, or rotator cuff tendons. It’s essential to get a diagnosis of the area because there are different types of tendon pathologies, as they don’t respond to the same types of treatments.

Lower back pain is common among athletes and weekend warriors. Most lower back pain is mechanical, meaning either the muscles are working abnormally or the joints are being compressed. This is treated rather quickly if the underlying issue is addressed.

Neck pain is common among swimmers and cyclists. This usually occurs due to postural imbalances, abnormal muscle tension, and joint restrictions. Most athletes will experience quick relief once the diagnosis has been made.

The most common knee sports injuries include ligament sprains, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, which often occur during sudden stops or changes in direction. Meniscal tears are also prevalent, resulting from twisting motions while bearing weight on the knee. Additionally, patellofemoral pain syndrome, commonly known as “runner’s knee,” is a frequent overuse injury affecting the cartilage under the kneecap and causing pain during activities like running, jumping, or squatting.

One of the most common causes of hip pain in athletes is bursitis, an inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the hip tendons. Another common injury or ailment is hip impingement, or femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), which can occur when the hip bones abnormally rub against each other, resulting in pain and limited range of motion.

Dr Sharon was diligent in dealing with my back and neck issues. She increased my mobility tremendously and the home exercises she gave me did wonders for my golf game and general health. In September 2022 I had a complex shoulder surgery and began a regimen of physical therapy with Dr. Sharon Sims of Back in Motion here in Verandah. I can only say that today I’m in better physical shape then I’ve been in years. By following her treatment plan I’m able to play “pain free golf” a couple of time a week and participate in fitness activities -- pickleball is next on my list. It wasn’t easy, requiring a lot of work, but it paid off. Thanks Dr. Sharon.I have been seeing Dr. Sharon for a few weeks. After the 2nd visit the severe lower back pain was alleviated. So much so that I have been able to resume golf with much better swing ( although that's not saying much LoL).If you need physical therapy this is the place and she is the right doctor.Be prepared to work hard. If you follow directions you'll be satisfied.

Dr. Sharon is a miracle worker! I ended up with nerve damage after a partial knee replacement and was very slow to recover. Dr. Sharon kept me motivated even though I was not seeing immediate improvement. I kept at it and she has helped me build back my quad strength and range of motion. She noticed I also had some back issues and the orthopedic inserts she recommended for me are really alleviating my back pain and helping me with my gait. I also tried dry needling and that also helped relieve pain and helped with my range of motion. My surgeon said it could take up to a year for my nerves to regenerate and I plan on continuing to see Dr. Sharon until I reach my goal of walking without a limp and being able to resume an active lifestyle. Dr. Sharon was able to adapt exercises so that I could feel that I was improving and her vast experience in the field was obvious. I strongly recommend Dr. Sharon for both flexibility and pain treatment as well as post operative care. She is the best!

I attended an arthritis discovery seminar by Dr. Sharon Sims and found it very informative. I booked my first appointment for an evaluation and the office staff made the process extremely easy and more importantly, efficient! Dr. Sharon's diagnosis was thorough and a treatment plan immediately put into place and future appointments booked. I feel much better after just 4 appointments. Thank you, Dr. Sharon and Back in Motion! Highly recommend!

I suffered a stroke in early October 2021. The stroke mostly resulted in numbness and loss of sensory perception on my left side. However, Dr. Sharon pointed out that it also involved some loss of some motor skills along with a weakened sense of balance.Dr. Sharon has been working with me not only in strengthening my left side but also increasing my sense of balance which has definitely improved over the last several weeks. My golf game has also improved as a result of the therapy.Dr. Sharon’s diagnostic and evaluation skills are exceptional along with her ability to arrive at a treatment plan that has reduced some of the damage from my stroke. I highly recommend Dr. Sharon and am thankful for the physical therapy which she has provided. Thanks,Gary C. Reich D.D.S. ( retired)
