Are You Currently Plagued by Persistent Foot and Ankle Pain?

Do you find yourself struggling with discomfort, stiffness, or continuous agony in your lower extremities?

It’s a common misconception to believe that such symptoms will simply fade away on their own. You might attribute them to factors like wearing uncomfortable shoes, the natural process of aging, or engaging in activities that put strain on your feet and ankles.

Unfortunately, despite the absence of an obvious cause, the pain persists and shows no signs of subsiding.

Rest assured, you’re not alone in this struggle. At our clinics, we frequently encounter cases of individuals seeking relief and answers for their ongoing foot and ankle pain. Many mistakenly believe that the pain will miraculously vanish overnight, only to discover that it worsens over time.

Another common scenario many of our patient’s experience is being advised to rest and “try these painkillers” to see if it improves.

However, this advice seldom yields the best results, and after six weeks, they find themselves returning to the doctor because the pain hasn’t subsided.

Unfortunately, they are often prescribed stronger medications and advised to rest even more or they result in injections or surgery they may not need.

Has something similar happened to you before with your foot or ankle?

The reasons why foot and ankle pain persists longer than expected can be perplexing, particularly when you receive conflicting explanations from various sources. It’s not uncommon for well-meaning individuals to offer advice, but not all of it is reliable or credible.

Perhaps you initially believed that a specific incident, such as a misstep or overexertion, was responsible for your foot and ankle pain. However, the reality often reveals that years of overuse or underlying conditions have contributed to the weakened structures in your lower extremities, with those incidents merely serving as triggers for the underlying issue.

Dealing with foot and ankle pain can be confusing and disheartening, especially when you’re uncertain about the best approach for relief. Consequently, many individuals resign themselves to accepting the pain as a normal part of life.

Nevertheless, it’s crucial to recognize that foot and ankle pain is not a normal state, and there are effective solutions available to help you conquer it.

At Back in Motion Physical Therapy & Performance, we take an entirely different approach to assessing and treating foot and ankle pain. We offer a holistic approach with the intention to addressing the underlying cause rather than the symptoms.

Our physical therapists in Fort Myers & Estero, & Cape Coral physical therapist can help you literally get “back in motion” quickly.

What Causes Foot & Ankle Pain

Foot & Ankle Pain Conditions We Treat are the Most Common Causes of Foot & Ankle Pain in the Conditions We Treat

Bursitis

Fallen Arches

Fractures

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Arthritis is a common inflammatory condition that affects joints and causes foot pain. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common types. Both types of arthritis can significantly impact the foot and ankle joints. Arthritis can affect people of all ages.

Several tendons work together to form the arch of your foot. Your foot will create a proper arch when the tendons pull together correctly. Your foot will form a minimal arch or no arch at all if the tendons do not pull together properly. This is known as a “fallen arch” or “flat foot,” which can cause pain or discomfort in the long run.

Ligament Sprains and muscle strains occur frequently and are often confused with one another! A sprain happens when a ligament is overstretched or torn, whereas a strain occurs when a muscle or tendon is overstretched. A physical therapist should evaluate both of these injuries to ensure no long-term damage occurs.

This condition happens when the tarsal tunnel (the nerve that runs from the ankle to the foot) becomes pinched and painfully inflamed. Sharp, shooting pains, “pins and needles” sensations, and burning sensations in the feet are all symptoms.

Bursitis occurs when the tendons rub against the anti-friction sacs known as “bursae,” causing irritation and discomfort. This condition can also affect your elbow, shoulder, and hip, but it most commonly involves your foot and heel.

A fracture occurs when the bone is subjected to excessive force or trauma, causing it to crack or break completely. A foot or ankle fracture could necessitate weeks of rest to ensure proper healing.

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the connective tissue on the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia. This might happen due to aggravated usage, such as prolonged standing, poor posture, or improper arch support in footwear.

Tendonopathy describes any problem with a tendon, including disease, injury, or disorder.

  • Tendinitis: Tendinitis is defined as an inflammation of the tendon. Acute injuries, including minor or partial tearing, can produce an inflammatory response.
  • Tendonosis: Tendinosis describes a dysfunctional tendon and typically does not specify the pathological process. It generally is used to describe overuse-type conditions.
  • Tenosynovitis: This condition is often thought to be an overuse problem and is likely due to inflammation and/or irritation between a tendon and its surrounding synovial sheath (i.e., a thin layer of tissue surrounding a tendon).
  • Tendon tears and ruptures: A tendon tear/rupture is a partial or complete tear of your tendon. An injury causes most tears during sports or a fall.
  • Peroneal tendonitis: The peroneal tendons are located on the outer aspect of the lower leg. Peroneal tendonitis is inflammation of the tendons that are often the result of overusing the tendons or a sudden injury such as an ankle sprain.
  • Achilles tendinopathy: Achilles tendinopathy is often associated with degenerative changes, usually due to overuse and excessive chronic stress upon the tendon. It can be seen both in athletes and non-athletes. For some, the pathological changes may or may not be associated with an Achilles tendon tear. A lack of flexibility or a stiff Achilles tendon can increase the risk of these injuries.
  • Posterior tibialis tendonitis: The tibialis posterior muscle is located deep in the back compartment of the lower leg. It is a key stabilizing muscle supporting the medial arch of the foot.

The posterior tibialis is often associated with shin splints due to overuse from running and other intensive weight-bearing activities such as jumping.

Overuse of the tendons can become chronic and excruciatingly painful over time, exacerbating the situation. Even simple tasks, such as walking to the end of the driveway to check the mail, can be complex with tendinitis.

In September 2022 I had a complex shoulder surgery and began a regimen of physical therapy with Dr. Sharon Sims of Back in Motion here in Verandah. I can only say that today I’m in better physical shape then I’ve been in years. By following her treatment plan I’m able to play “pain free golf” a couple of time a week and participate in fitness activities -- pickleball is next on my list. It wasn’t easy, requiring a lot of work, but it paid off. Thanks Dr. Sharon.I have been seeing Dr. Sharon for a few weeks. After the 2nd visit the severe lower back pain was alleviated. So much so that I have been able to resume golf with much better swing ( although that's not saying much LoL).If you need physical therapy this is the place and she is the right doctor.Be prepared to work hard. If you follow directions you'll be satisfied.

Dr. Sharon is a miracle worker! I ended up with nerve damage after a partial knee replacement and was very slow to recover. Dr. Sharon kept me motivated even though I was not seeing immediate improvement. I kept at it and she has helped me build back my quad strength and range of motion. She noticed I also had some back issues and the orthopedic inserts she recommended for me are really alleviating my back pain and helping me with my gait. I also tried dry needling and that also helped relieve pain and helped with my range of motion. My surgeon said it could take up to a year for my nerves to regenerate and I plan on continuing to see Dr. Sharon until I reach my goal of walking without a limp and being able to resume an active lifestyle. Dr. Sharon was able to adapt exercises so that I could feel that I was improving and her vast experience in the field was obvious. I strongly recommend Dr. Sharon for both flexibility and pain treatment as well as post operative care. She is the best!

I attended an arthritis discovery seminar by Dr. Sharon Sims and found it very informative. I booked my first appointment for an evaluation and the office staff made the process extremely easy and more importantly, efficient! Dr. Sharon's diagnosis was thorough and a treatment plan immediately put into place and future appointments booked. I feel much better after just 4 appointments. Thank you, Dr. Sharon and Back in Motion! Highly recommend!

I suffered a stroke in early October 2021. The stroke mostly resulted in numbness and loss of sensory perception on my left side. However, Dr. Sharon pointed out that it also involved some loss of some motor skills along with a weakened sense of balance.Dr. Sharon has been working with me not only in strengthening my left side but also increasing my sense of balance which has definitely improved over the last several weeks. My golf game has also improved as a result of the therapy.Dr. Sharon’s diagnostic and evaluation skills are exceptional along with her ability to arrive at a treatment plan that has reduced some of the damage from my stroke. I highly recommend Dr. Sharon and am thankful for the physical therapy which she has provided. Thanks,Gary C. Reich D.D.S. ( retired)
