3 Exercises to Help You Stay Independent and Move Pain-Free
As we celebrate Independence Day this month, it’s a great reminder that one of life’s greatest freedoms is the ability to move without pain or limitation.
Whether you’re playing golf, traveling, exercising, chasing your kids or grandkids, or simply wanting to feel confident in your body, moving well gives you the freedom to enjoy life on your terms.
Here are three simple exercises we regularly recommend to improve mobility, strength, and movement quality.
1. Sit-to-Stands
This is one of the most effective exercises for building lower-body strength and improving everyday movement.
Sit on the edge of a sturdy chair with your feet shoulder-width apart. Stand up without using your hands if possible, then slowly lower yourself back down with control.
Why it matters: Strong legs make everything easier—from climbing stairs and getting out of the car to improving your squat, hike, or golf game.
Goal: 2–3 sets of 10 repetitions.
2. Bird Dog
Start on your hands and knees with your spine in a neutral position. Slowly extend one arm and the opposite leg while keeping your hips and shoulders stable. Return to the starting position and repeat on the opposite side.
Why it matters: This exercise strengthens your core, improves balance, and teaches your body to move more efficiently—helping reduce unnecessary strain on your back.
Goal: 2 sets of 8–10 repetitions per side.
3. Wall Angels
Stand with your back against a wall and slowly slide your arms overhead while keeping them in contact with the wall as much as possible. Move slowly and stay in control throughout the movement.
Why it matters: Good shoulder and upper-back mobility improves posture, reduces stiffness, and makes everyday movements like reaching, lifting, and exercising feel easier.
Goal: 2 sets of 10 slow, controlled repetitions.
Better Movement Creates More Freedom
These exercises aren’t about becoming an elite athlete—they’re about building a body that allows you to keep doing the things you enjoy.
If any of these movements are painful or feel unusually difficult, don’t ignore them. Pain and stiffness are often signs that your body is compensating for an underlying movement issue.
At Back in Motion, we help people identify the root cause of those limitations and create personalized plans that improve movement, build strength, and keep them doing what they love.
Because the goal isn’t simply to move more.
It’s to move better—for life.
Happy Fourth of July, and here’s to the freedom that comes from a healthy, capable body.
