Signs you may have thoracic outlet syndrome
Check everything that sounds like you.
TOS is often missed or mistaken for a pinched nerve in the neck or carpal tunnel. A thorough evaluation is how you find out.
Find Out What's Causing Yours
Rest and medication calm the symptoms. They don't open up the space.
If you're feeling unexplained tingling, numbness, or heaviness in your arm, hand, or shoulder, especially after sitting, driving, or lifting overhead, you may be dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). It's caused by compression of the nerves or blood vessels between your neck, collarbone, and shoulder, and it's one of several types of pinched nerve we treat. At Back In Motion, we help active adults in Fort Myers and Cape Coral find lasting relief. Common causes we see:
- Forward head and rounded shoulders that narrow the outlet
- Tight neck, chest, or upper back muscles
- Repetitive overhead lifting, sports, or work strain
- Weak shoulder blade stabilizers
- Past injury or anatomy differences (like an extra rib)

Common questions about thoracic outlet syndrome
What is thoracic outlet syndrome?
It's compression of the nerves or blood vessels in the space between your neck, collarbone, and first rib. It can cause numbness, tingling, weakness, heaviness, or aching in the shoulder, arm, and hand.
Can physical therapy help thoracic outlet syndrome?
Yes. Physical therapy is a common first treatment for nerve-related TOS. Improving posture, shoulder blade control, mobility, and how you breathe and move can open up the space and reduce symptoms.
How is TOS different from carpal tunnel or a pinched nerve in the neck?
They can feel similar. Carpal tunnel affects the wrist, a pinched nerve in the neck starts at the spine, and TOS happens between the neck and shoulder. A thorough evaluation helps tell them apart, and some people have more than one.
When should I see a doctor right away?
See a doctor promptly if your arm becomes swollen, changes color (pale or bluish), feels cold, or if you have sudden severe pain. These can be signs of blood vessel involvement, including a blood clot, and need medical attention.
