Tried the Gym. Tried a Trainer. Still Not Stronger — and Still a Little Afraid to Push?

Here’s the truth nobody at the big-box gyms in Fort Myers will tell you.

If you’re looking for personal training, you’ve probably already run into the problem: it isn’t your age, and it isn’t your discipline. It’s that the two options you’ve been offered were never going to work.

You’ve joined the gym. Maybe you’ve hired a trainer. One of them was affordable and nobody watched you. The other one watched you closely and cost more every month than you wanted to spend forever. So you drifted from one to the other, and somewhere in there you stopped going.

That’s not a willpower problem. Nobody sustains a plan that either ignores their body or drains their bank account. This is where Back in Motion’s small group training comes into play.

Does this sound familiar?

  • You joined a gym in January and haven’t been back since February.
  • You’ve worked with a trainer before — it worked, right up until you added up what it cost for the year.
  • You’ve walked past a machine because you weren’t sure it was safe for your knee, and nobody was there to ask.
  • You want someone to tell you what to do today, not hand you a printout and walk away.
  • You’d show up far more often if someone actually noticed when you didn’t.
  • You’re not fragile. But you’re not thirty either — and nobody at the gym seems to know the difference.

What Small Group (Semi-Private) Training Actually Means

Let’s be specific, because the fitness industry has made this term meaningless.

Small group training at Back In Motion is not a class. Nobody stands at the front shouting. There is no shared workout of the day. Nobody is doing burpees because the person next to them is doing burpees.

Here’s how it actually works:

2 to 4 people train in the same space at the same time, with one coach.

Each person follows their own written program, built from their own assessment, aimed at their own goals.

The coach moves between you, cueing, correcting, adjusting, and progressing each person individually.

You are still known. Your coach knows your surgical history, the shoulder that flares up, and what you’re training for.

You’re sharing the coach’s time. You are not sharing the program.

(The industry calls this “semi-private training.” We just call it the format that makes real coaching affordable.)

For a Lot of People, This Format Beats One-on-One

That sounds like something a gym would say to sell you a cheaper package. It isn’t. Here’s the honest mechanism:

You show up.

The single biggest predictor of results is not program design — it’s consistency. When there are other people expecting you at 7am on Tuesday, you go. Even on the days you’d have talked yourself out of a private session.

You stay longer.

Small group clients tend to stick with training for years rather than months, and the price point is a big reason why. The best program is the one you can actually sustain.

You work harder.

Not because anyone is competing — but because effort is contagious in a room of three.

It’s less exposing.

A lot of people find one-on-one training intense — an hour of undivided attention on a body they’re not thrilled with. Training beside two other people is, for many, considerably more comfortable.

You build something.

People make friends in these groups. They notice when you’re gone. That’s not a fitness benefit — it’s the reason people are still training three years later.

A Doctor of Physical Therapy Oversees Every Program

This is what separates a small group at Back In Motion from a small group anywhere else in Fort Myers.

Every person in the room was assessed before they were ever loaded. Every program was built around what that person’s body can actually handle — the bad knee, the fused disc, the shoulder from 1998, the hip replacement.

And if something flares up mid-session? You don’t stop training and go hunt for a doctor. You’re already in the clinic.

That’s the thing a bootcamp structurally cannot do — and it’s why our small groups can train people that other gyms turn away.

Is Small Group Training Right for You?

It’s a great fit if you:

  • Want real coaching but not a one-on-one price tag every week
  • Do better with accountability and other people in the room
  • Have trained before and want to be consistent long-term
  • Want to train with a spouse, a friend, or a training partner (ask us — you can bring your own group)

  • Have finished physical therapy and want to keep what you rebuilt

One-on-one is the better call if you:

  • Are coming straight out of surgery or a significant injury
  • Have complex medical needs that require constant hands-on attention
  • Are brand new to lifting and want undivided attention while you learn
  • Have a schedule too unpredictable to commit to a set group time

We’ll tell you honestly which one you need. If you’d be better served one-on-one, we’ll say so — even though it’s a bigger commitment for you. Putting someone in the wrong format is how people get hurt and how they quit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Between 2 and 4. Small enough that your coach can watch every rep. (Confirm actual cap.)

No. In a class, everyone does the same workout. Here, everyone follows their own program — you’re simply sharing the coach’s time rather than the coach’s plan.

Significantly less per session, because the coach’s time is shared across the group. [Request pricing and availability] and we’ll send you the current options.

Yes — and many people do. If you have your own pair or trio, we can often build a group around you.

In most cases, yes — and that’s exactly what makes us different. Every member is assessed by a clinician first, and every program is built around that person’s history. If small group isn’t the safe choice for you right now, we’ll tell you and point you to the right starting place.

No. Every person in the room is working from their own program at their own level.

No. Florida allows direct access.
