Speed Isn’t Just About Running More. Here’s What’s Actually Holding Most Athletes Back.

Most athletes who come to us aren’t lazy. They’re already putting in the work — extra reps after practice, offseason camps, private lessons, a speed program a coach sent them on Instagram. And they’re still getting beat to the ball.

That’s because speed and agility aren’t just conditioning. They’re the product of how well an athlete produces force, absorbs it, and redirects it. If one link in that chain is weak, stiff, or moving in a compensated pattern, no amount of extra sprinting fixes it. It just buries the problem under fatigue. That’s why we created our sports performance training program at Back in Motion.

Does this sound like your athlete?

  • Fast in a straight line, slow to change direction. They can run, but they lose a step every time they have to cut, plant, or react.

  • The first step is the problem. Acceleration out of a stance or a shuffle feels heavy and slow.

  • They’ve plateaued. Times stopped improving months ago no matter how much work goes in.

  • Something always tightens up or flares. Recurring hamstring, groin, knee, or shin complaints that never fully clear.

  • Nobody’s told them why. They’ve been given drills, but never an explanation of what specifically is limiting them.

“He was doing speed camps every summer and his 40 time didn’t move. Nobody ever looked at how he was actually moving.” — Parent of a high school athlete

Here’s the part most speed programs skip: two athletes can post the same time and be limited by completely different things. One is losing time because they can’t decelerate, so their body slows them down before every cut as a protective reflex. Another has plenty of power but leaks it through a hip or ankle that won’t stabilize. Same symptom. Opposite fix.

Running both of those athletes through the same cone drill is why so many families spend a season on speed training and see nothing on the field.

We take a different route. Every athlete starts with an assessment of how they move — force production, deceleration, single-leg control, and mobility — so their program targets the actual limiter instead of a generic drill list. Then our performance coaches build it into progressive weekly sessions and track it, so improvement is something you can see on paper, not just hope for.

“For the first time she understood what she was working on and why. That’s what made her stick with it.” — Parent of a club soccer athlete

Here’s the Good News: Speed Is Trainable — When You Train the Right Thing

Speed responds to training remarkably well. Athletes who’ve been stuck for a year often see meaningful change within a single training block once the actual limiter is addressed. The trick is knowing what to work on.

That’s what separates our program. We don’t hand your athlete a drill list. We find out what’s slowing them down first.

What’s included in our speed & agility program:

  • A Movement-Based Starting Point: Every athlete begins with an assessment of acceleration mechanics, deceleration control, single-leg stability, and mobility restrictions — so the program has a target.

  • Sprint Mechanics Coaching: Direct work on posture, shin angle, arm action, and ground contact. Technique is the fastest-returning variable in most young athletes.

  • Change-of-Direction & Reactive Agility: Progressing from planned cutting patterns to reactive, sport-realistic decision-making — because games aren’t run through cones.

  • Strength That Transfers: Force production and force absorption work built to support speed, not compete with it.

  • Progressive Programming With Real Tracking: Sessions build week to week and we re-test, so progress is measured rather than assumed.

  • Trainer-Led. PT-Designed.: Sessions are coached by our performance staff, using a training framework built by our physical therapy team.

Speed & Agility Training: Common Questions

Most athletes are ready around age 9 or 10, though what “training” means changes a lot with age. Younger athletes spend most of their time on coordination, body control, and sprint mechanics — the skills that make everything later work better. Older and more experienced athletes move into heavier strength work, reactive agility, and sport-specific demands. We scale to the athlete in front of us, not to a birthday.

It depends on what’s limiting the athlete. Technical limiters — poor shin angle, sloppy arm action, a bad first step — often improve quickly because the athlete is simply doing something more efficiently. Strength and force-absorption limiters take longer because you’re building tissue capacity, not correcting a habit. We re-test so you’re looking at data, not opinion. Most families training consistently start seeing change within the first block.

No. Conditioning improves how long an athlete can work. Speed training improves how much force they put into the ground and how well they redirect it. Those are different systems and they’re trained differently. Our sessions cover sprint mechanics, acceleration, deceleration, change of direction, reactive agility, and the strength work that supports all of it.

Our performance coaching staff runs every session. The training framework and movement standards behind the program were designed by our physical therapy team — that’s what we mean by trainer-led, PT-designed. It means your athlete gets coached by people who do this all day, working from a system built by clinicians who understand how bodies produce and absorb force.

Bring it up on the assessment. If something is actively painful or hasn’t resolved, the right first step may be physical therapy rather than performance training — and we’ll tell you that plainly. We have both under one roof, so the handoff is straightforward either direction. What we won’t do is load an athlete on top of an unresolved problem and hope it works out.
Yes, and most of our athletes are. We schedule and program around practice, lifting, and competition so you’re adding to the training load intelligently instead of stacking fatigue on top of a full season. Tell us the schedule and we’ll build around it.
Any sport where getting to a spot faster matters — baseball, softball, soccer, football, basketball, lacrosse, volleyball, track, tennis, and more. The underlying qualities are shared across sports; how we apply them changes based on the demands of the position and playing surface.
No. Speed and agility training is a performance service, not a medical one, so it isn’t billed to insurance. We’re cash-pay across the practice, which means no authorization delays, no visit caps, and no surprise bills months later. Pricing is transparent and we’ll go over it before you commit to anything.
Cost depends on session frequency and program length. Rather than quote a number that may not fit your situation, we’ll walk you through the options on your consultation call. Use the Request Pricing & Availability link and we’ll send you the specifics.
We look at how your athlete moves — acceleration mechanics, how they decelerate and cut, single-leg control, and any mobility restrictions. You leave with an explanation of what’s limiting their speed and what addressing it would involve. It’s free, there’s no obligation, and it’s genuinely useful information whether you train with us or not.
